Sr. Principal Scientist, Computational Biology
What you will do

The Computational Biology group in the Center for Technology and Innovation (CfTI) within the Precision Medicine organization at Amgen is looking for a highly motivated Computational Biologist with expertise in translational and reverse-translational computational biology, biomarker development, assay development, ML algorithms & data science, statistical modeling, handling clinical data sets. This is a high-visibility, individual contributor role preferring experience within matrixed environments representing the function and requiring familiarity with multiple therapeutic areas, with a focus on Oncology.
In this vital role, the Sr. Principal Scientist will be a leading expert responsible for planning and executing scientific research within their specialty. They analyze data from their studies, contribute to scientific literature, and guide junior scientists. Their work, using advanced technologies and methodologies, helps in the discovery, development, or enhancement of the company's products.
Responsibilities
Serve as the primary functional intake point for all requests pertaining to reverse translation analysis performance on clinical data; work cross-functionally across multiple computational groups to assure most effective division of work while leveraging strategic group capabilities and delivering fit-for-purpose insights
Coordinate with the research Precision Medicine team and Discovery Biomarker functions to ensure coverage of their analytical requests from data generated from Amgen clinical trials and publicly available biomarker and omics datasets
Coordinate with other Computational Biology staff to compile analysis results for Discovery Biomarkers
Apply computational, biostatistical, machine learning methods and simulations to facilitate high quality reverse translation and further future translation
Champion and exemplify the application of knowledge graphs and modern AI/ML (including generative and transfer learning techniques and task-specialization of foundational models) to enable the discovery of new targets, PD biomarkers and patient selection signatures from high-content clinical data
Conduct analysis (hands-on) pertaining to assessment of biochemical coverage, patient stratification, indication selection and exploration of mechanism of action through the application of data science, knowledge discovery, and data mining techniques
Develop translational informatics analysis workflows in a high-content, multi-omics, multi-modal data domain encompassing genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, epigenomics and spatial-omics
Work with biologists, to leverage information on targeted biological pathways along with development of computational algorithms to manage and mine internal and external genomics and other high content databases.
Represent CfTI in Amgen program/portfolio teams as a biomarker analysis lead.
Interface cross-functionally with the early development teams, assay laboratories, in-vitro diagnostics teams, and biomarker representatives

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree and 2 years of scientific experience
Or
Master’s degree and 4 years of scientific experience
Or
Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of scientific experience
Or
Associate’s degree and 10 years of scientific experience
Or
High school diploma / GED and 12 years of scientific experience
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Biology or Data Science, with a minor or robust background in Biology
A working knowledge of bioinformatics, applied mathematics and data science to analyze multi-modal, multi-dimensional and large-scale biological data sets such as those from next-generation sequencing DNASeq, RNASeq, proteomics, imaging and spatial-omics assays
A working knowledge of platforms and readouts utilized for the assessment of clinical biomarkers including but not limited to flow cytometry, IHC, NGS, immunoassays, imaging, proteomics and transcriptional profiling assays
Expertise and experience translating insights from population-level analyses to clinical trial data
A good understanding and practical skills in statistics and their use in data analysis for clinical settings
A working knowledge and experience of Machine Learning and AI technologies—experience applying ML/AI in clinical trial settings is required
Ability to translate biological and medical questions into analytical models providing actionable results
Programming experience in R & Python
Experience in implementing program-based strategies for both pharmacodynamic and patient stratification biomarkers and in explorations of mechanisms of action
Familiarity with assay development and qualification requirements for clinical trial support
Ability to work in a highly matrixed environment and drive scientific and technical innovation collaboratively with other members of the group, as well as with Amgen research community
A strong scientific background with a proven track record of productivity
Strong written and oral communication skills, project management skills and organizational awareness, self-motivation, independence, and leadership

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
