Grad Intern - Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism (Proteomics focus)
What You Will Do

During this program, you will work within the Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism group at Amgen to develop innovative drug discovery techniques to support programs across multiple therapeutic functions within research and development. Your work will inform drug-target engagement, mechanism of action, and aid in the discovery of novel biomarkers to facilitate drug development. The intern will be responsible for performing cell culture and treatment, sample preparation, reagent screening, LC-MS/MS method development and data analysis. Other responsibilities include electronic laboratory notebook keeping and communication of results to project teams.
The department of PKDM within Amgen is dedicated to the discovery and development of novel effective, safe medicines. The intern will work in a team environment to characterize the absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and pharmacokinetic properties of therapeutic drug candidates to achieve their full pharmacological potential. PKDM works in close partnership with fields such as medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, pharmaceutical sciences, clinical pharmacology and regulatory to design promising clinical therapeutic candidates, conduct preclinical development studies, support clinical evaluation and contribute to IND and NDA filings.
We are looking for a graduate student with proteomics background. The intern will be working with the team to develop and optimize an untargeted proteomics workflow to identify unknown protein adducts from small molecule drugs and their metabolites, and a targeted LCMS workflow to validate and quantify the adducts. The developed workflows will be implemented into early drug discovery programs with the aim to provide mechanistic insights to support decision-making. The intern will also need to the following:
Review and summarize project-related literature
Design and implement project-related experiments
Analyze, interpret, and present data within PKDM

Basic Qualifications:
Amgen requires that all individuals applying for a grad internship or a co-op assignment at Amgen must meet the following criteria:
18 years or older
Graduated with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Currently enrolled in an MBA program for an MBA internship OR a Master’s program for a Master’s internship OR a PharmD program for a PharmD internship OR Ph.D. for a PhD internship from an accredited college or university and completion of the first year of MBA OR Master’s OR Pharm D OR Ph.D. program before the internship starts
Enrolled in an accredited college or university following the potential internship or co-op assignment
Must not be employed at the time the internship starts
Student must be located in the United States for the duration of the internship or co-op
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree Concentration(s) in analytical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology or a related field
Basic trainings in LCMS
Basic understanding in enzyme inactivation mechanisms
Hands on experience in proteomic MS sample preparation technique (biological processing, enzymatic digestion, SPE etc.) and LCMS is preferred
Highly motivated; enthusiastic about science and problem solving

The base pay range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $30 - $40 per hour.
